Patient Education

thump SealantsDental sealants are a highly effective way to prevent tooth decay on back molars. Fluoride in toothpaste and drinking water help to protect the smooth surface of teeth, however, your back teeth need extra protection.

Dental sealants are a thin layer of resin that is placed over a tooth. The tooth is first cleaned and dried with cotton placed around the tooth to keep it dry. An adhesive is applied to the tooth to create a rough surface for adherence. The sealant is then applied to the tooth and hardens quickly.

When Should a Patient Get Sealants?

When a child gets their permanent molars, it’s time to get them sealed. This way, the teeth are sealed before tooth decay develops. Any other teeth that a dentist evaluates with pits and grooves may also need to be sealed.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can last up to 10 years but it’s still important to get regular checkups to monitor whether any of the sealants are chipped or cracked. These can be repaired during regular checkups.
